We provide treatment for bad breath in Glasgow in our fresh breath hygiene clinics. The medical term that is used to describe chronic bad breath is ‘Halitosis’ and unfortunately up to 30% of people in the UK suffer from chronic bad breath. This can be extremely embarrassing and you may notice people taking a step back when you talk or avoiding kissing you on the lips.

Thankfully at Complete Dental Care we can provide simple and effective advice and treatment to give you a clean mouth with fresh breath. All you need to do is contact one of our clinics and book a visit with our dental hygienist.

What causes bad breath?

There are many causes of bad breath and there are many things that you can do to prevent it and to improve your breath on your own.

  • Food – certain foods (like onions or garlic) have a strong aroma and will stay on your breath for hours after you have eaten them. You can simply avoid eating these types of food at lunch so that during the day you will have fresh breath. If you eat them at night be sure to have some mints or chewing gum handy to help get rid of the aroma quickly.
  • Smoking – this causes a very distinct type of smell from your mouth which you will likely be unaware of if you smoke but people around you will be able to smell easily. Again by eating a mint or chewing gum soon after this can help disguise the smell.
  • Dry mouth – the saliva in your mouth acts as a natural defence against many bacteria and diseases and also helps to keep your breath fresh. If you keep your mouth moist by drinking plenty of water throughout the day then you can help to prevent a dry mouth.
  • Poor oral hygiene – if your mouth is not cleaned thoroughly or if you suffer from gum disease or periodontal disease then you will also suffer from bad breath. This is probably one of the most common causes of chronic bad breath which is caused by a build up of bacteria in your mouth which release smelly gasses. You must ensure to brush your teeth thoroughly for 2 mins twice daily and floss your teeth regularly to clean between them.

Bad Breath Treatment at the Fresh Breath Clinic

Bad breath can actually be a warning sign that you are suffering from gum disease. If there is a build up of plaque or tartar on your teeth then there will be an increase in the amount of bacteria in your mouth which will in turn give you smelly breath. To make matters worse the bacteria that are involved in gum disease tend to create more odour than other bacteria. If you visit us for a fresh breath hygiene visit then we will firstly examine your mouth and gums to determine how much plaque and tartar are present and how healthy your mouth is. We will gently clean your mouth to remove all of the build up of bacteria and staining from your teeth leaving your mouth feeling fresh. We will also discuss and advise you of the best methods to ensure that your mouth stays clean and fresh. For some people with on going gum problems we usually recommend that they visit us on a 3 monthly basis so that we can ensure their mouth stays clean and their gums stay healthy.

If you have any concerns about your breath or if you would like some advice then please contact us at either our Cambuslang or Glasgow dental practice and we will be happy to help you.
