Porcelain (tooth coloured) inlays and onlays are restorations placed usually on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. They are much stronger than traditional fillings and are used when you require a large filling or if your tooth has been root treated. As the porcelain restoration covers the biting surface of the tooth, it helps to strengthen the tooth and prevent the tooth breaking.
Two visits are required to complete the treatment. The procedure involves removing decayed tooth structure or old fillings, preparing the tooth cavity and taking an impression of the cavity. This impression is then sent to a dental technician to fabricate a custom fit inlay. At the second visit the porcelain inlay is bonded to the tooth using a special adhesive.
