How do lingual braces work?
The lingual braces are fitted to the inside surfaces of your teeth and use a special passive ligation design that dramatically reduces friction. The low friction and light forces have been shown to move teeth very efficiently. Most cases are finished in less than 16 weeks!
Who are ideal candidates for lingual braces?
Adults and teens who wish to improve their smile but do not want people to know that they are have orthodontic work carried out. Lingual orthodontics are best suited to situations when the tooth movements are mainly in the front of the mouth.
How are lingual braces fitted?
Following your initial consultation to decide if lingual orthodontics are the correct choice for you the lingual braces are fitted to your teeth in a single visit. Your teeth are cleaned and the metal attachments are secured to the inside of your teeth with special tooth glue. A special lingual arch wire is shaped and adjusted before inserting it. The arch wire puts pressure on your teeth to gently pull your teeth to a straight position.
What happens after lingual braces are fitted?
It is normal to have some discomfort in tongue but this quickly goes away as the braces have been designed in such a way to help the tongue easily adapt to them. Some tenderness of the teeth when chewing is normal but again this settles quickly as the teeth start to move. You will normally have visits at 4-6 weeks apart to check on progress and adjust the arch wire as necessary.
What are the main benefits of lingual braces?
Invisible – the main benefit of lingual braces is that you can have orthodontic treatment without anyone knowing. If you are put off by the thought of wires and attachments visible on your teeth then this could be the ideal option for you. STB social 6 braces are designed to be hidden behind your teeth.
Speed – the braces use a special ‘self ligating’ system so that they work faster with many people seeing results in as little as 6 weeks.
Comfort – they are one of the most comfortable orthodontic systems due. The self ligating system allows the wire to move throughout treatment without the need for tightening and so there is a constant gentle force on the teeth. This also means that you generally require fewer visits with us during treatment.
