Sometimes brushing and flossing is not enough to remove tough stains and plaque from your teeth. Choose on option from our dental hygiene menu below so that we can give you beautiful, clean teeth.

What is a Dental Hygienist

A dental hygienist is an integral part of our team. Gum disease is the main reason that people will loose their teeth. Hygienists are specially trained in cleaning your teeth and gums to prevent gum disease. Along with ensuring your gums are healthy they will show you how to care for your teeth and gums at home.

What does a Dental Hygienist do?

The hygienist’s main work is to prevent and treat gum disease. They will professionally clean your teeth with special instruments. This is usually called a ‘scale and polish’. They will also show you the best way to clean your teeth to ensure they stay plaque free. Plaque is a soft, yellow coating that builds up on your teeth throughout the day. If it is not brushed away properly or regularly then it can hard to form tartar. Once tartar has formed then you will not be able to remove this yourself. It is usually a yellow colour but can sometimes be brown or black in colour. Plaque and tartar are full of bacteria which can cause decay in your teeth and also which can cause gum disease in your mouth.

The hygienist will examine your mouth and will advise of the level of cleaning your require depending on the amount of tartar and staining that you have on your teeth.

Why doesn’t the Dentist do this work?

The dental hygienist has been specially trained to carry out scaling and polishing of your teeth and so in many cases will be able to clean yor teeth better than the dentist can. Also they will spend longer with you and will be able to teach you how to look after your teeth and gums.

What can I do to keep my mouth healthy?

The dental hygienist will show you the best way to remove plaque from your teeth with a toothbrush and also how to clean in between your teeth with floss and interndetal brushes. You are in control of your mouth between visits and your daily cleaning routines at home are the most important part of maintaining a healthy mouth.

We recommend the following:

  • Brush your teeth at least 2 times daily. Last thing at night and in the morning
  • Reduce the number of times you have sugary foods and drinks during the day
  • Visit the dentist for regular check ups (usually every 6 months)
  • Visit the hygienist for regular cleaning (usually every 3 months)

By following this simple advice you will help to keep your teeth and gums healthy. For any further advice please ask the dentist or hygienist at your next visit with us.
