We have our dental sedation clinic running again today and it is fully booked as usual. Intravenous sedation works very well and can relax even the most phobic of patients. It is a very safe procedure if it is carried out properly. At Complete Dental Care we are fully trained and equipped to carry out iv sedation in a safe environment. One of the health checks that we perform is to check your blood pressure. This is initially checked at a separate assessment visit to ensure you are healthy enough to undergo dental sedation. It is again checked at the start of every dental sedation visit to double-check there have been no changes.
Why do we check your blood pressure?
At the sedation assessment visit, we need to consider your entire medical history to determine if you are suitable for intravenous sedation within a dental practice setting. We classify patients broadly into different risk groups taking into account any medications they may be on and also if they have any diseases such as diabetes or heart problems. The classification system we used is called the ASA physical status classification system and has been in use in hospitals and dental practices since the 1960s. Your blood pressure plays a large part in this assessment because if your blood pressure if higher than normal then this can indicate that you have an underlying disease that you are not aware of. If your blood pressure was found to be very high then we would refer you to your GP to have it investigated before carrying out any dental treatment with intravenous sedation. Along with checking your blood pressure we monitor your heart rate and breathing throughout your treatment visit with sedation and this is something that we will talk about in another blog.
