Dental Implants are the best option for replacing any missing teeth if you live in Glasgow. If you are missing any teeth then having them replaced with dental implants will give you the closest thing to your natural teeth. There are many different types of dental implants and many techniques that can be used for replacing teeth and so sometimes it can be confusing as to what and how dental implants actually work. Over the next few weeks we will be updating our blog to inform you all about the different options available to replace missing teeth with dental implants.
What is a dental implant?
Firstly it is important to understand what a dental implant actually is. When you smile you will see the tops of your teeth ‘ the crowns’ in your mouth but your teeth are actually much longer and larger as they all have roots which anchor them to your jaws. The roots under your gum are roughly double the length of the crown that you see in your mouth. A dental implant is a small titanium fixture that is designed to mimick the roots of your teeth. They are available in a range of different lengths and widths so that they can match in with the size of tooth that is missing. The reason that dental implants are made from titanium is that it is a very strong metal but more importantly when titanium is placed in your jaw then your bone actually grows around it and holds it in place very tightly.
After a dental implant is placed you will just see the very top of it in the mouth which just looks like a small metal circle. There are many different ways that we attach a tooth or several teeth to dental implants and we will discuss this in our next dental implant blog.
