At Complete Dental Care in Glasgow, we pride ourselves in providing quality dental care for your family. We particularly enjoy treating our younger patients and making them feel comfortable at their visits. It is important to create good oral hygiene habits from a young age and studies have shown that children with decay in their baby teeth are more likely to have decay in their adult teeth.
Childsmile is a national programme in Scotland that was introduced to improve the oral health of children. Our advice is to register your child soon after birth and ideally before they are 6 months old. During the early years we will give you advice on how teeth grow and develop in your child’s mouth. We will also give you dietary advice, give hints and tips on how to clean their teeth and check that your child’s mouth is healthy. From the age of 2 we also apply a fluoride varnish twice every year, to help protect and strengthen their teeth.
We recommend to bring your child for an exam every 6 months, so that along with ensuring their mouth is healthy, we can make sure they have a good experience visiting the dentist and encourage and reinforce good oral hygiene habits.
The first adult tooth typically start to come through at around 6 or 7 years of age and it is most commonly the top front baby teeth which are replaced. Soon after this though, the first molar teeth will start to come through behind all of the baby teeth. These teeth can be tricky to clean due their shape, so we normally place a white protective sealant over the top of the tooth. This is to make the top of the tooth smoother so less likely to trap food and easier to clean.
