The new year has recently started, the schools are back and most people are now back into their work routine. Many of us will have new years resolutions with a lot of people starting a diet following the festive period. The aim is to better ourselves and improve our overall health. As part of this it is important to maintain a healthy mouth and a healthy smile.
Steps to getting a healthy smile
- Brush your teeth 2 time daily for 2 minutes with a flouride toothpaste. It is easy to let this lapse and skip brushing some evenings but this is possibly the most important time to brush your teeth. During the night when you are sleeping, bacteria will have more of a chance to grow in your mouth and cause problems. Brushing your teeth before you sleep removes plaque from your teeth and the the fluoride in the toothpaste helps to strengthen your teeth.
- Avoid too many sugary foods. It is okay to have the occasional treat but you need to be careful, as sugar is the main culprit in causing tooth decay. Try to reduce the amount of times during the day that you have sugary snacks and if you do have them, then it is best to have it at the same time as your meal time.
- It is important to make sure and have regular check ups with your dentist. Along with a thorough check of your teeth and gums, we also check for mouth cancer. Dental problems often need to be fairly severe before they give you any pain. Usually we can spot potential problems well before it reaches this stage, which makes any treatment easier for us to provide.
Along with ensuring you have a healthy mouth, we can provide a range of cosmetic treatments to whiten and improve the appearance of your smile. If you would like to know your options then simply speak to us at your next appointment.
